Whitney-on-Wye
Whitney and Winforton WI
Whitney and Winforton WI meets on the second Monday of each month – during the summer we meet at Whitney Village Hall at 7.30 pm. In winter months we meet at 2.30 pm at various members’ homes.
At present, we are 20 members. We try to present a varied programme of speakers covering all aspects of life. We have an Open Meeting every October inviting neighbouring WIs including those over the border into Powys.
A very popular event during the winter is our monthly lunch, cooked at a member’s home, so the food is delicious. It’s a wonderful chance to chat with everyone and catch up on their news as sometimes this is not possible at a busy meeting.
We welcomed visitors to our open meeting in October, which, in the absence of Dorothy was ably presided over by Barbara. Ray Broadhurst presented our WI with a beautiful, engraved gravel in memory of Audrey. This is a very apt memorial as she often wished she had something to bang on the table when trying to keep us in order during meetings. We will think of her whenever it is used. Our thanks to Ray for such a lovely gift.
Penny Platts gave us a very entertaining talk with slides on the ‘History of Cider’ which appears to have been the most versatile and beneficial of beverages over hundreds of years and good for many an ailment. Of course we had a tasting session sampling some of the best local ciders. The evening was rounded off with delicious refreshments provided by all our members.
Our next meeting will be the AGM on Monday November 8th at 7.30pm in the village hall. If any one would like to join our small and friendly, our meetings normally take place on the second Monday of the month and any new members will be made most welcome.
